Mumbai Indians Highlights in the IPL 2021
Mumbai Indians, the only team from India’s capital city, are owned by Indian multinational conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited and were founded in 2008.The 2021 season is the 14th season for the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians. They were one of the eight teams competing in the 2020 Indian Premier League. Mumbai Indians are currently the defending champions. The team is currently being captained by Rohit Sharma with Mahela Jayawardene as team coach.
Mumbai Indians (MI) is the only team to have lifted the IPL trophy five times. The defending champions, under the leadership of their charismatic captain Rohit Sharma must be rearing to keep the good form from the start. Often called the ‘late bloomers’, MI would be aiming for a positive start from the beginning just like last year.
Mumbai Indians usually play at the 33,000-seater Wankhede Stadium and are the most successful team in the history of the IPL. The team has won the league on five occasions in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. As reigning champs, the team will be among the favourites to win three on the trot after a consistently dominant couple of years.
In 2019, they downed Chennai Super Kings in the final, winning by just a single run to become the first team to win the IPL for a fourth time.Their fifth title came against the Delhi Capitals in the 2020 final, in which the Mumbai Indians took the win by four wickets to tighten their grip on the IPL.
Fans will be hoping to see the best out of their star players this season once more, including Rohit Sharma who leads from the front. Seven new players have joined the team ahead of the 2021 season, including Pujush Chawla, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Adam Milne.However, a major loss is fast-bowler and Yorker specialist Lasith Malinga. The South African national retired from T20 cricket in January of 2021, leaving a notable dent on the roster.
Some MI players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav are currently busy in the ongoing Test tour against England and will fly to UAE next month. IPL 2021 is set to commence on September 19.
In the first leg of IPL 2021, Mumbai Indians played most of the matches at MA Chidambaram Stadium. They struggled with the batting scoring some low totals, however, also managed to successfully defend the target with exceptional bowling in few games. Currently, Mumbai Indians holds the 4th spot in the IPL 2021 points table with 8 points. Out of 7 matches, the defending champions have won 3 and lost 4. In the 2nd leg, Mumbai Indians will play a total of 7 matches during the group stage.
